I knew a lot of the DJs and they'd make all those mistakes in the beginning. I'd tell them, you're not a superstar. You're a jukebox. Play requests. The dance floor is the heart beat of a club. Keep it healthy and working. Play new stuff and requests an hour or so after opening, then a new song every 3-4 in the beginning of the night. At midnight, play the crowd pleasers. People are drunk or close to it. They want to let go and have fun. They wouldn't remember a new song after hearing it then even if it bought them a drink and proceeded to pour it over their heads.

I would see incredible DJs with full floors 95% of the time get fired because a guy at the bar complained (Most people like that, if they didn't have anything to complain about would complain that too!). Not a dancer, just a guy. That's just poor management. LOL
Hope to see you out soon!

In Denver, you can go out four nights a week where you would run into a fairly large goth contingent. On Fridays, there's actually two places that plays alternative, goth and EBM. I go to the one where the deejay doesn't try to be cool.

Great post!

#2 is a huge thing here. There is one club night here in NYC (of the goth variety) where the playlist is almost exactly the same every.single.time.

#3 really gets me too.

Actually, all them are so spot on!

Last week, I went dancing on a Wednesday and this new guy was guest deejaying in the other room. I don't know what he was playing but it was slow, unmelodious and undanceable. That song emptied a full dance floor in 15 seconds. Epic fail.

Thankfully, Headhunter is not being played weekly anymore. For about 3 years, it got replaced by Wolfsheim's Once In a Lifetime. For the last year or so, it's been replaced by Combichrist's This Shit Will Fuck You Up.

Ha! This is great, Corin, and I so agree with #1. I am very open to many types of music, but if it sucks, it sucks, and I'm not going to pretend it doesn't suck just because it's "obscure." I find the elitist mentality funny, unless I'm out dancing and an elitist DJ appears out of nowhere to do a set. Then it's not so funny.

I added blip.fm links to some of the bands I mentioned.

I keep forgetting that anyone outside of the alternative crowd hasn't heard of any of the bands.

Thanks for commenting.

I don't know who any of the bands you mentioned are but I do like to dance as long as no one is taking pictures.

Crappy DJ's can suck it.
